Holiday Checklist for Your Vehicle

November 15th, 2016

The holidays are approaching fast, which means Christmas gift lists and careful budgeting. The last thing anyone wants is to be blindsided by an unexpected Holiday Travel in Abbottstown PA auto repair bill. With travel coming up, here are some preventive maintenance ideas to keep that from happening:

Tires: Check your tire pressure monthly, and remember that underinflated tires cost you money in terms of premature tire wear and decreased fuel economy. While you’re at it, go ahead and have your tires rotated to ensure even wear. Tires should be rotated every 5,000 miles, which brings us to our next bullet point:

Oil Change: Having your oil changed at regular intervals is still the best way to reduce engine wear and prolong engine life. Conventional oil should be changed every 5,000 miles (if your vehicle’s off the ground for a tire rotation, it makes sense to do an oil change as well), and synthetic oil every 10-12,000 miles.

Engine diagnostics: If your Check Engine light is illuminated on the dashboard, it could be a minor problem or it could be a sign of something more serious. The network of sensors that monitor engine functions, emissions and performance are designed to register a trouble code if there’s a problem, illuminating the dashboard Check Engine light. A technician can then use a code reader/scanner tool to access the trouble codes and narrow down the source of the problem.

Air filter: Your engine’s air filter keeps pollen, dust and other contaminants from entering the fuel system, where they can do some real damage to the engine’s internal parts, all of which run on incredibly tight clearances with each other. A clogged air filter, however, means poorer performance and fuel economy as the restricted air flow literally smothers the engine. Changing the air filter is a quick and easy fix, and should be done at about a 10,000 mile interval.

At L & M Tire & Wheel in Abbottstown, PA, we hope that you all have a safe and happy Thanksgiving and Christmas with friends and family. If you’ve got travel coming up and  want to make sure your vehicle’s in good shape for the road, make an appointment with us for a checkup!
